Few plays in the modern theatre have so captured the imagination and heart of the American public as Tennessee Williams’ elegiac masterpiece, The Glass Menagerie. As his first popular success, it launched the brilliant and enduring career of one of America’s most accomplished and respected 20th century playwrights – resulting in what Williams’, in his own words referred to as “the catastrophe of success.”
Acutely autobiographical, The Glass Menagerie plumbs the emotional depths of the Wingfield family - a single mother and her two adult children living in poverty in a dingy St. Louis apartment – as they navigate their hopes, fears, and the illusions which prop up their lives. A “memory play”, it is narrated in hindsight by the son, Tom, who subtly demonstrates the ways in which we rewrite history to spare ourselves its truths. A drama of great tenderness, charm, and beauty, Arthur Miller described its effect stating, “The Glass Menagerie in one stroke lifted lyricism to its highest level in theatre’s history.”
Williams explored human passion with daring honesty, and forged a poetic theatre of raw psychological insight that shattered conventional proprieties and transformed the American stage.
