The Round Whidbey Island 3

  • Whidbey Island Center for the Arts 565 Camano Avenue Langley, WA, 98260 United States (map)

FEATURING: Tomo Nakayama, LAKE, Joseph Sanchez, poet: Hannah Lee Jones, and live painter: Madeline Owen.

Please join us for this unique evening of collaborative arts: music, poetry, and painting.

Whidbey Island the Round was born out of collaboration with Seattle’s Fremont Abbey, this multi-artist event showcases musicians/songwriters, slam poets, and a live painter on the stage simultaneously. The community arts interaction offers access to under-produced artists and strong arts collaboration. The Round 3 continues last season’s strong start.

LAKE (Whidbey Island) is an experimental-pop ensemble centered on the songwriting partnership of wife/husband duo Ashley Eriksson and Elijah Moore. LAKE is, as always, unparalleled in re-imagining and renewing the melodic language of 1970s soft-rock, (think Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, The Roches, Laura Nyro, etc), implementing jazz-chord voicings, memorable hooks, and a wide palette of colorful, inventive instrumentation.

Tomo Nakayama by Ian Allen

Named "Best Folk Act 2017" by Seattle Weekly, Tomo Nakayama has consistently created music that is complex, nuanced, and emotionally compelling.  His decade of work both as a solo artist and as front man in his chamber-pop band Grand Hallway has been praised by NPR, New York Times, and KEXP.  Known for his crystalline high-tenor voice, intricate fingerpicking, cinematic production style, and simple, poetic lyrics imbued with warmth and humanity, Tomo’s songs have drawn comparisons to Paul Simon, Elliott Smith, and Jeff Buckley.

Joseph Sanchez is a musical shaman (in training). This path has lead him to many different instruments over the last 30 years. His knowledge includes: the pulsing vibrational healing of the didgeridoo, the tribal funky groves of the congas, and the soothing melodies of the bamboo flute. Joseph thrives on improvisation. He is currently a core musician for Prayerbody dance church every Sunday morning here on Whidbey island.
