Eleni Matos in the Lost Art Songs of Luise Greger

  • Whidbey Island Center for the Arts 565 Camano Ave Langley, WA, 98260 United States (map)

Luise Greger is at this very moment being rediscovered as one of the best song composers of the Romantic period. She died mysteriously in Nazi dominated Berlin in 1944, having written 200 songs and courageously pursued a composer's career as a woman. Her most beautiful art songs will be presented in Langley by an extraordinary opera singer, Eleni Matos of the Lyric Opera of Chicago, who has been chosen by the Greger family in Everett, WA to represent her music and her amazing story.

A winner of more coveted prizes from the most prestigious singing competitions, including the Pavarotti, Maria Callas, Carmela Attamura, Enrico Caruso competitions, Mezzo Soprano Eleni Matos performs the North American premier of lost treasures from the Lieder of a major German composer. Before the rise of Hitler, Luise Greger was recognized as one of the greatest musical artists of the Romantic period. Though much of her work was destroyed or lost during WWII, her family made a rare find – they discovered 170 of Luise’s original works in an old iron trunk. Her work has since been revived in concerts and radio programs throughout Germany. Her fairytale opera “Goose Girl” is currently being performed around Germany. She has been recognized among the talented German speaking females of “The Sophie Project” by Brigham Young University in 2003. In 2013, her work was showcased in Kassel, Germany, as one of “11 Women of the Ages” (“before the traces blow away”).

Girls in the Sunlight presents the Luise Greger International Music Festival in collaboration with Northwest Language Academy Cultural Center and REC Music Foundation. Girls in the Sunlight’s mission is to promote the economic advancement of talented female artists and entrepreneurs. Proceeds from the August 15th WICA program will go to Girls in the Sunlight for the purpose of producing the Greger Festival, featuring the works of talented female artists, on an annual basis and Luise’s fairytale ”Goose Girl” in collaboration with other Whidbey Island organizations and individuals.
