Featuring:

JOVINO SANTOS NETO

Rarely does one experience the mystical, musical treat of Jovino Santos Neto playing live—on his own!

Three-time Latin Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto, a master pianist, composer and arranger, is among the top Brazilian musicians working today. Currently based in Seattle, Washington, he has throughout his career been closely affiliated with the Brazilian master Hermeto Pascoal.  He was an integral part of Pascoal's group from 1977 to1992, where he fine-tuned his artistry, performing around the world and co-producing several legendary records.

Jovino's personal style is a creative blend of energetic grooves, deep harmonies, telepathic improvisation, lyrical melodies and great ensemble playing, always inspired and informed by the colorful richness of Brazilian music. His compositions includesamba, choro, baião, xote, forró, marcha and many more styles, rooted in centuries-old musical tradition while pointing to new and adventurous harmonic languages.

Currently, Jovino leads his Seattle-based Quinteto and teaches piano and composition at Cornish College of the Arts. He can also be heard around the world as a piano soloist, working with symphony orchestras, jazz big bands, chamber music groups, and in collaboration with musicians such as his mentor Hermeto Pascoal, Bill Frisell, Paquito d'Rivera, Airto Moreira, Claudio Roditi, David Sanchez, Joe Locke, Marco Granados and many more.

Jovino's compositions have been performed by the Seattle Symphony, NDR Big Band in Hamburg and by numerous jazz and chamber music groups. Jovino gives lectures, clinics and master classes worldwide on a variety of musical topics.

Jovino has received commissions by the Cheswatyr Foundation, IAJE, ASCAP, CMA/Doris Duke Foundation, Jack Straw Foundation, the City of Seattle, 4Culture, Artist Trust and Meet the Composer. He has been artist in residence at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world. In 2012 he was inducted into the Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame and his Quinteto won as Best Northwest Acoustic Group in the Golden Ear Awards by Earshot Jazz. He also was awarded an Artist Trust Fellowship in Music in 2012.

He is currently working on writing his musical memoirs, to be published in the near future.

Whidbey Island Center for the Arts’ second annual PianoFest Northwest (PFNW), a four-day piano music festival running April 16-19, 2014, features a Locals Night - 4/16, as well as Classical - 4/17, World - 4/18, and Jazz Music - 4/19. Respectively, the headliners for each day are local Northwest favorite Nancy Nolan, spectacular female trio Thirty Fingers, three-time Latin Grammy Award-winner Jovino Santos Neto, and performing on Whidbey Island for the first time in years, native piano virtuoso Aaron Parks.

PianoFest Northwest 2014 will feature WICA's newly acquired and reconditioned Bechstein 9'2" Concert Grand, a world class piano for our invited artists. Acquired last fall through the generosity of a special group of donors, the Bechstein is an imposing presence on stage, and at the same time a responsive instrument in the hands of a master pianist that will thrill the audience and artist alike.

PianoFest is an entertaining, educational, and inspiring expression of piano music on Whidbey Island. This festival is an annual tradition of eclectic keyboard experiences that will grow to embrace the developing talent of piano students in the community.
